Moderation

Warn, mute, kick and ban with /warn, /mute, /kick, /ban, /unban and /unmute, from the Moderate menu (right-click a member, Apps, Moderate) or on the dashboard's Moderation page. Every action is one numbered case: /cases and /case show them, and so does the dashboard.

Punish players in Minecraft

Mutes, kicks and bans can reach the Minecraft server too, so staff never have to log in to the game for it.

  • A member with a linked account: /ban member:@Steve bans them in Discord and their linked Minecraft account on every connected server (this server's setting, see below). /mute and /kick stay in Discord unless you change that setting or choose.
  • A Minecraft player: /ban player:Steve reason:Griefing works for anyone the servers saw in the last week or who linked an account, even without a Discord account. Type a few letters and pick the name from the list, or paste their UUID.
  • Choose where: where: Discord, Minecraft or Both. For example /mute member:@Steve duration:1h where:Both.
  • One server only: server:Survival. Without it, every connected server gets it.
  • Temporary bans: /ban player:Steve duration:7d. Discord and Minecraft lift it at the same moment; a mute always has a length (up to 28 days, and staff levels may allow less).
  • Lifting: /unban player:Steve and /unmute player:Steve, or the Unban and Unmute buttons on a member's page and on the Minecraft player page of the dashboard.

The reply says what happened in each place, for example "Banned in Discord. Banned on Survival; Creative did not answer yet, it will be retried." A server that is offline gets it when it connects (a kick only within ten minutes, everything else within a week). The case shows each server's answer.

In game a banned player sees the reason when they try to join, and how long the ban lasts. A muted player cannot chat or send private messages (/msg, /tell, /w, /r, /me and the others the server owner lists), is told why and until when, and their chat is not sent to Discord.

The same rules as in Discord apply to a linked account: staff cannot punish themselves or the server owner through their Minecraft account, and with the commands not a fellow staff member at their level or above either.

What the Minecraft server needs

  1. The VV-Bot plugin 1.3.0 or newer. Older plugins can still kick and ban if their owner listed those actions, but not unban, mute, unmute or ban for a limited time.
  2. The server owner switches punishments on once: /vv punishments on in the server console (or in game as an operator). See Install the plugin. Until then the dashboard and the replies say exactly that.

Ban sync

On the dashboard, Settings, Moderation (administrators):

  • When someone is banned in Discord, also ban their linked Minecraft account (on by default). Unbans follow.
  • When a Minecraft account is banned through VV-Bot, also ban the linked Discord member (off by default). Unbans follow.
  • Also follow Discord bans made outside VV-Bot (off by default): a ban or unban made with Discord's own menu or another bot reaches the linked Minecraft account too, recorded as a case.
  • Where a mute applies and where a kick applies when staff do not choose: discord, minecraft or both.

A ban never goes round in circles: where it applies is decided once, when it is made, and one case covers both places. A ban VV-Bot made is never followed a second time.
